Who is Lutheran Living?
The mission of Lutheran Living Senior Campus is to provide compassionate Christian ministry, addressing individual health care needs of its resident community.
Compassionate Christian ministry is at the heart of our mission to care for the people at Lutheran Living. Our full-time chaplain provides support in faith life, ministry to individual spiritual needs respectful of their religious traditions, pastoral care in times of crisis, and regular opportunities for worship and spiritual growth.
Spiritual opportunities include regular Sunday worship in Faith Chapel, weekly Bible study, daily devotionals, special weekly worship for memory care residents, memorial services, monthly Catholic Mass, and weekly Catholic Communion services. Our chaplain also provides pastoral visits to those hospitalized, and counseling to our residents and patients, family members and staff. Faith Chapel can be used by residents and patients, family members, and staff for prayer and meditation. The chapel also welcomes area congregations for special services for their resident members.
Lutheran Living is a Social Ministry Organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), only one of four in the state of Iowa. This means when people are facing a need, as a partner of this larger organization, we respond with care and compassion and are ready to serve and love our neighbors.
The Lutheran Homes Society was organized in 1895 through the efforts of Reverend Henry Reinemund. Mrs. Elizabeth Hershey, wife of a wealthy lumberman, donated her large country home and five acres of land to be used for the care of orphaned children.
Originally, all efforts were channeled into providing nurturing in a Christian environment for children. Later, Lutheran Homes expanded its Christian concern to include care services for the elderly. With the completion of Valley View Manor Nursing Facility in 1967, the path was set for dedication to senior living and care. Adjacent farmland, which once helped sustain our orphan children, now serves to bring enjoyment to residents as they view the tilling of the soil and harvesting of crops.
Now, as Lutheran Living, we embrace our vibrant future with continual advancements in service to seniors.
